J&F Investimentos, the holding company controlled by the Batista family, which also owns Brazilian protein giant JBS, is planning to expand its energy portfolio with a large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and thermal power plant at the Port of Suape in Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil.

The project was reported by journalist Leandro Mazzini in Diario de Pernambuco. According to Mazzini’s report, the project will integrate LNG imports, gas regasification and electricity generation within the same industrial complex. The investment is expected to reach several billion reais.

The development will be carried out by Âmbar Energia, J&F’s energy subsidiary, which currently operates 59 power generation units with 6.3 GW of installed capacity and has a strong presence in Brazil’s natural gas market.

The Port of Suape, located in Pernambuco, is one of Brazil’s main port and industrial hubs. The port is strategically positioned in the Northeast, with connections to major regional markets and more than 160 ports worldwide. Its surrounding industrial complex includes activities related to shipbuilding, refining, petrochemicals and renewable energy components.

J&F Expands Energy Portfolio

The Suape project is another step in J&F’s expansion into Brazil’s energy sector.

In 2025, Âmbar Energia also expanded its presence in the nuclear energy sector through the acquisition of Eletronuclear’s assets for R$535 million (approximately US$103 million at the time).

The company’s broader energy strategy includes investments across thermal power generation, natural gas infrastructure and other segments of Brazil’s electricity market.

Similar Projects Across Brazil

The Suape project is part of a broader trend of investments aimed at strengthening Brazil’s natural gas and power generation infrastructure, particularly through the integration of LNG import terminals, regasification facilities and thermal power plants.

Another example is Eneva, which recently began construction of a new natural gas-fired power plant at the Port of Pecém, in Ceará, also in Northeastern Brazil.

Eneva Begins Construction of 1.2 GW Natural Gas Power Plant at Pecém Port

Eneva is investing approximately US$1.2 billion in the project, which will have 1.2 GW of installed capacity and integrate natural gas and port infrastructure.

The combination of LNG infrastructure and thermal power generation is emerging as an important model for expanding Brazil’s gas supply and electricity generation capacity, particularly in regions with access to major ports.
